In the modern world, from the birth of a child to the death of a person and in between illnesses, documentation of the medical record is compulsory. This documentation is not only for patient's benefit, but also is used for statistical, research, legal, insurance purposes etc.

 What is Medical Transcription?

The Doctor after examining the patient has to put the entire patient�s history, tests, prescriptions etc, in writing, document and record it. He does so either by dictating his notes on a mini- tape recorder or directly to a computer called �Dictation Machine� using, microphone or telephone.

These voice files are later listened by the person and typed in text document. The person, who listens and types it, is called a Medical Transcriptionist. Since this work is very expensive in USA, it is done as a big industry, in Asia.

 Who can get MT Training?

Anyone! whether Young or Old, Male or Female, Housewife or a Student, even professionals. The minimum requirement for the MT trainee is Intermediate with good English and listening comprehension. The Para-medical staff is always encouraged, since it is very easy for them to pick up the medical terminology.

 MT Business

According to the estimates, the present market size of MT Business is about 10 billion US $, which is increasing annually. Lot of work is being outsourced to other countries like India and Pakistan. India is far head from us, since it is doing about a business of 01 billion US $ annually, while Pakistan is doing only about 12 million US $.

We are lucky to have our time zones, 12 hours behind USA. That means when the doctor in USA dictates his notes at evening that is morning for us in Pakistan. After whole day of transcribing and editing, when the files are sent back at our evening, it is next morning in USA and before the doctors come to his office next morning, our document is right on his table. That is why, the business is readily out-sourced to India and Pakistan.

 Can it be done at Home?

 Yes. The advantage about this business is that it does not need big offices or rented places. It can be easily done at your home, via Internet connection. All you need at home is few computers, a dedicated telephone line, fast Internet connection, headphones, foot paddles, few software, and of course, an International client, who will send you the files.

 Difference between an MT & QC.

QC is a course designed for the doctors, dentists and medical students. For every 4-5 MT�s, there is a doctor trained as QC, editing and correcting documents which has been typed by the MT.  The training duration for QC is one month, where they are trained in computer applications, typing, English Grammar and practiced on Voice Files, with special focus on editing, so that they can become a good Quality Editors.
